Photo 3: Mountain Heights

mont-sarratPhoto by Jay Ricketts, taken at the summit of Spain’s Montserrat, August 2016

For someone who was afraid of heights – and more afraid of walking for hours – hiking up a 4000 ft mountain was to be a foreboding task. However, the sense of achievement I accomplished at the summit made it all worth it, conquering my fear of heights with overwhelming vertigo in the process, and the image above captures this moment. The rocks in the image are absolutely huge, and their size in the foreground compared to the tiny rivets pictured in the background accentuate the height of the summit from the perspective of the lens. The earthy colours in daylight, of browns and greens, provide a natural sense of calm, adding to the silence and stillness of being at the top of a mountain, away from the rest of the world.
